Glenbow Reimagined: Indigenous Engagement - Building Design

Timeline: April – December 2021

Project Description:
Many Chief Consulting Ltd. was contracted to lead the Indigenous engagement process for the Glenbow Reimagined revitalization project, a complete renovation aimed at transforming the museum into a contemporary cultural institution. This engagement marked the Glenbow Museum’s first Indigenous consultation in over 20 years, ensuring the meaningful incorporation of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into the museum’s short- and long-term planning, programming, and operations.

The engagement process sought to honor Indigenous voices and inform the design and strategic vision of the revitalized museum, with a focus on creating a respectful and inclusive space that reflects the diverse Indigenous cultures of the region.

Key Project Tasks:

  • Engagement Strategy Development: Designed and implemented a comprehensive Indigenous engagement strategy.

  • Stakeholder Consultation: Conducted meetings with key Indigenous stakeholders, including Elders, cultural leaders, and community members, to gather advice and insights.

  • Final Reporting: Summarized findings and provided actionable recommendations for the Glenbow Reimagined capital project, ensuring Indigenous guidance was integrated meaningfully into the museum’s vision.

Outcomes:

  • Engaged with over 200 Indigenous individuals, including representatives from Indigenous communities, organizations, and individuals with vested interests.

  • Facilitated a consultation session with the Blackfoot Elder Advisory Committee, including members who contributed to the Blackfoot Gallery over 20 years ago.

  • Conducted in-depth, one-on-one discussions with Treaty 7 Elders and cultural leaders to gather guidance on respectfully sharing Indigenous culture in partnership with a non-Indigenous institution.

This project highlights MCC Ltd.’s commitment to fostering meaningful collaboration between Indigenous communities and cultural institutions, ensuring Indigenous perspectives are respected and represented in public spaces.
