Impact Assessment Agency of Canada: Indigenous Communications Plan

Project Description:
Many Chief Consulting Ltd. was engaged to develop a revised Indigenous Communications Plan for the IAAC Communications Division, providing strategic advice on effectively and respectfully communicating with Indigenous Peoples across Canada under the context of the Impact Assessment Act. This project focuses on creating a communications strategy that is culturally sensitive and aligned with the historical and lived experiences of Indigenous communities while addressing their unique communication preferences.

The plan includes a strategic and tactical framework for enhancing the Agency's communication practices and providing ongoing advisory support to ensure communications materials remain respectful and effective.

Key Project Tasks:

  • Strategy Review and Revision: Analyzed and updated the IAAC’s Indigenous Communications Strategy, addressing gaps and areas for improvement.

  • Social Media Guidance: Provided recommendations on tone, permissions, messaging, platforms, and appropriate use of images when engaging with Indigenous audiences.

  • Collaboration Recommendations: Offered guidance on working with Indigenous groups, organizations, and media to foster respectful relationships.

  • Gap Analysis and Recommendations: Conducted a comprehensive review to identify missing policies, directives, or activities and proposed solutions.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitated internal engagement sessions across IAAC divisions, including Indigenous relations and operations, to align the communications strategy with organizational goals.

Outcomes:

  • Developed and presented revised Indigenous Communications Plan recommendations, which have been approved and are under active development.

  • Conducted internal engagement to understand the communications landscape within IAAC and create a roadmap defining roles across divisions.

  • Ongoing advisory support to ensure communications materials, including graphics, social media content, and speeches, remain culturally sensitive and aligned with Indigenous protocols.
